Here's an interesting lightsaber knockoff I picked up at Toys R Us. It's called the Space Defender Space Squad Saber. Say that five times fast!
Please forgive me for these oddly blurry photos.
It comes with a red or blue handle.
There's no date on this thing anywhere that I could find. I think my Toys R Us store dug up some old stock recently, so there's really no telling when this was originally sold. Without removing the toy from the box, I was able to remove the batteries and found "04-2012" on the end of them. I don't know if this means April 2012 or what, but for anyone who knows about batteries, maybe this'll help you determine the time frame these toys were sold.
When the button is pressed, the blade and part of the handle put on a light show, and of course various laser sounds are made. What really makes this product interesting is its Star Wars imagery. Just check out the inside front of the box; there's a Star Destroyer, some X-wings, and a few Y-wings!
The sides of the box are pretty random and don't really have anything to do with the toy or Star Wars. The left side has a really dramatic picture of a guy shooting towards us. The right side shows some cool looking space agent guys (or something).
On the back it says, "NEWTOYS & NOVELTY(HK)LTD." "PENINSULA CENTRE, TST EAST, KOWLOON, HONG KONG".
What's funny is the Newtoys logo (which is also shown on the back of the box) is written in the Star Wars font!
On the toy's handle is a sticker that says, "GUANGDONG YINRUN INDUSTRY CO. LTD." "SHANTOU CITY, CHINA" "1641004430CN".
Here they are in their natural habitat, in Toys R Us.
Check out the Space Defender Space Squad Play Set page here at Strange Star Wars Collecting; they have a lot in common.
